This software began life as a plug-in for Photoshop that emulated grain found in film photography.Īlien Skin has rebuilt the app as a standalone browser that’s on par with Adobe’s Bridge for most uses, though it needs more work on metadata handling. The surprise of this collection of browsers is Alien Skin’s Exposure X3.

Pixelmator Pro (Mac only), Capture One Pro, DxO PhotoLab, Exposure X3, On1 Photo RAW 2018, Photo Mechanic, Corel AfterShot Pro 3, Affinity Photo and Luminar 2018. I evaluated the following digital photography tools, almost all of which are available in Mac and Windows versions. Universal RAW file support, easy metadata review with fast mass embedding, templates for often repeated information, batch renaming and basic image toning that’s easily applied to groups of photos.Īn image editor must support layers and channels, offer intuitive masking, selection and feathering tools, tone and colour adjustment, metadata access and Photoshop standard plug-in support. There are features that any new image editing and management software must have for me ( Why I’m doing this).įor a browser, fast previews of large datasets of images are my first requirement, followed closely by clear-cut tagging systems for sorting. So, how do you replace Photoshop and Lightroom/Bridge in 2018? I realize nothing out there is going to be perfect, but I am absolutely ready for a change from LR regardless of licensing model.Above: Luminar 2018. I'm sick of catalogs and importing, sick of fiddling about with adjustment editing handles, and sick of jumping between external editors and plugins. One other thing I'll add is that even though it was Adobe's stance on subscription that spurred me to look at LR alternatives, it's now the editing style more than anything that is driving me to change. Also, C1 is available both as a one-off payment and a subscription - how long before subscription becomes the only option?

C1 also has some really odd holes: no direct before/after comparison (though there's a simple workaround), no editing history panel (some argue not required, but I'm not entirely convinced), and though CA correction is present it doesn't offer the same manual control that LR has. The obvious downside is cost but 'm hoping Black Friday will help out here. The UI is downright awkward compared to ASE, but more sophisticated control is available in almost every dept (especially color) By using the default "session" only (and avoiding catalogs entirely) it's not dissimilar to ASE in terms of file handling: no import process, just browse and edit. So now C1 Pro v10 has gone to the top of my list:

Color controls are better than LR ins some ways, but lacking in others. Yep, I can do CA correction in another app but I really want to avoid that if I can. This, more than anything, is why ASE is no longer in my top spot. Unfortunately it lacks the following three things that I now realize are pretty much deal-breakers for me: I edited some shots in ASE that I'd done in LR6 and greatly preferred the results.

I still really, really like ASE X3 the UI is clean, consistent and intuitive, the layered edit system is really well implemented and it seems much faster than LR6. I say "was" because it's now been displaced into the number 2 spot by Capture One Pro. I dunno if it was one of my posts that caught the OP's eye, but regardless ASE X3 was top of my list of LR replacements.
